Can SMEs Really Benefit from Artificial Intelligence?
Many small and medium-sized enterprises believe that artificial intelligence is not accessible to them. This idea often stems from a lack of knowledge about its practical applications and real benefits. Yet, studies show that artificial intelligence can transform the way they work, even with limited resources.
Artificial intelligence is already widely used in large companies, but only 5 to 10% of SMEs adopt it. However, it offers major opportunities, especially in the industrial sector. The main obstacle is not the size of the company, but the difficulty in identifying where and how to use it. Many managers mistakenly believe that their business is too small or that the costs are too high. In reality, solutions exist for modest budgets—sometimes less than $500—and can adapt to old machines or limited resources.
To demonstrate its potential, researchers have analyzed concrete use cases in SMEs. They have shown that artificial intelligence can optimize every step of production and management. For example, a company can automate the creation of advertising texts, reduce order preparation time by 75%, or even anticipate machine breakdowns to avoid production stops. In some cases, the gains are spectacular: a 2930% increase in the number of qualified potential customers, a 50% reduction in unnecessary stock, or savings of 20 to 40% in commercial services.
Artificial intelligence also improves product quality, secures data, and even enhances customer relationship management through chatbots capable of adapting to the mood of interlocutors. It makes employees’ work easier by automating repetitive tasks, such as documenting conversations or assigning materials in warehouses. The results are measurable: fewer errors, shorter deadlines, and better responsiveness to changes.
Before embarking on such a project, it is essential to prepare it well. Thirteen key parameters must be considered, such as budget, available skills, the amount of data required, or the choice between an internal or external solution. A structured approach helps avoid oversights and maximizes the chances of success. For example, an SME can start with a simple project, such as automating maintenance or optimizing inventory, before extending the use of artificial intelligence to other areas.
The challenge is not only technological but also organizational. Companies that integrate these tools gain in competitiveness and innovation. They transform their working methods and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. Artificial intelligence is no longer reserved for large groups: it is becoming an accessible lever for all businesses, regardless of their size.
